Dragon 13 quick start guide

Connect your microphone ??? When you plug your microphone into your PC, an ???audio event??? window may open. If this happens, verify what is highlighted in that window before closing it. ??? If you want to bypass your PC???s sound system (or if your PC has only one audio socket). consider using a USB adapter or USB microphone. ??? If your PC has only one audio socket, you can use a Y-shaped adapter. ??? If you use a Bluetooth?? microphone, plug its dongle into a USB port on your PC and make sure it is in call mode. For information on using a Dragon Bluetooth or Plantronics?? Calisto?? Bluetooth headset, please see: nuance.com/support/dragon-naturallyspeaking/index.htm ??? You may want to verify the ???recording??? Sound settings in the Control Panel (right-click the speaker icon in the System Tray). Important: If your microphone requires plugging into a USB port, you can now use any port and even plug it in after you open Dragon.

Step 1:

Install Dragon Note: If you have an existing version, we suggest backing up your profile first. ??? Exit any open program. If you???re running an antivirus program, turn it off until after the installation completes. ??? Put the Dragon DVD into your PC (or open the downloaded file) and follow the prompts. ??? Enter the serial number found on the DVD sleeve (or, if you purchased a download, in the email you received). Click Next, accepting all the recommended options.

Step 2:

Your user profile If you are new to Dragon: A series of screens will guide you to create the best possible profile for you. Don???t rush through it. It will determine your initial accuracy. Once your profile is created, Dragon offers ways to refine it, including designating specific text to analyze. If you used Dragon 11 or 12: Dragon 13 will detect profiles on your PC and start its Upgrade Wizard. (If you do not want to upgrade any profile now, close the wizard. You can launch it later from the Start menu.) Important: Once the upgrade completes, we strongly recommend you launch Accuracy Tuning (see the Audio menu) and read the What???s New.

Step 3:

Before you start dictating Go through the Interactive Tutorial (its simulations include practice for dictating, editing and using voice commands). Then click the DragonBar???s Help menu and see its content.

Step 4:

Personalize your profile???s vocabulary In order to dictate efficiently, you should let Dragon learn what you use: nicknames, jargon, capitalized phrases, email addresses, etc. Personalizing your Profile will prevent many errors. There are several means to do it including having Dragon analyze text similar to what you plan to dictate. See ???Improve my accuracy??? in the Help menu.

The Learning Center

The Learning Center displays sample commands (global and application-specific). It contains clickable links to related Help topics. You can open the Learning Center by saying ???Dragon Learning Center??? or ???What Can I Say???? Once installation is finished, make sure your microphone is connected, then start Dragon (double-click its desktop icon). Right-clicking the Learning Center displays a menu from which you can change the font size, print, and more. An important habit: Control whether Dragon listens You can control Dragon???s microphone by: ??? Pressing the + on the numeric keypad (this hotkey can be changed in Dragon???s Options dialog). ??? Clicking the microphone icon on the DragonBar or System Tray. ??? Using commands such as ???wake up??? and ???microphone off.???

Your first dictation

Start a word processor, make sure your cursor is in the document, then turn on the microphone and dictate sentences in a clear and natural voice. Say punctuation and commands like new paragraph. As you dictate, a small Dragon icon indicates that the software is processing. No need to wait for Dragon to ???catch up.??? Dictate at a natural pace. Aim to speak long phrases, since this gives Dragon some context and leads to much better results than slow, halting speech. Note: Dragon automatically handles a lot of formatting, including spacing, dates and percentages. If you want to capitalize a particular word, say ???cap??? or ???all caps??? before it.

Correcting

Although personalizing the vocabulary will prevent many errors, some errors are inevitable. By correcting Dragon???s errors, you can help it learn from them. Experiment with when and how to correct. Dragon lets you do it entirely by voice, but also allows typing over, pressing a hotkey, and more. (See the Options dialog.) When Dragon misrecognizes something you dictated, you can say ???Correct that??? or ???Correct ??? — being the wrong word(s) on the screen. On: Dragon is listening. Off: Dragon cannot hear anything Exiting Dragon It???s useful to exit Dragon at least once a day: from the Profile menu, choose Exit Dragon. If a message asks whether you want to save changes to your profile, say yes to preserve the refinements made during your session (such as analyzing text or adding a Spoken Form).

On October 26, 2012, Microsoft officially released its latest operating system, Windows 8. This article contains a list of supported Nuance applications, known issues and information about different updates for Windows 8.

Planning to upgrade to Windows 8:

If you are planning to install Windows??8 on an computer with an older operating system, we recommend uninstalling your Nuance software before starting the operating system upgrade. Failing to uninstall the Nuance software before upgrading the operating system may result in program instability.

During the uninstallation process, an active Internet connection will ensure that your product deactivates and your license key will be freed up for usage in the new environment (this will help you avoid running out of activations).

If there is a problem removing the Nuance software, please use the appropriate Nuance “Remover Tool” to manually remove the software. Remover Tools are available in the Nuance Knowledge Base, simply search for “remover tool” under the corresponding application.

 

For Scanner and Digital Recorder users:

We recommend visiting the manufacturer’s website for the scanner or digital recorder to check for compatibility with Windows 8. Please note that some devices may not function properly in a Windows??8 environment, and the manufacturer may not have released a Windows??8 compatible driver. After encountering any hardware conflict, we recommend testing the device outside of the Nuance software.

Downloading the Service Pack:

The Service Pack is available for download through the Nuance Update Service. The Nuance Update Service is an automatic update service included with Dragon NaturallySpeaking.

Note:??To access the “Check for Updates” menu from within Dragon NaturallySpeaking, you must be logged into the computer as a Windows User account that has administrator level permissions.

To open the Nuance Update Service, do the following:

  1. Start Dragon NaturallySpeaking 12.
  2. Click “Help > Check for Updates”.
  3. When the Update Service opens, select the “Service Pack 1 for Dragon NaturallySpeaking v12 – New” update.
  4. Click the “Download Only” button to save the Service Pack to the computer.
  5. Select a location to save the file (such as the Windows Desktop) and click the “Save” button.
  6. Once downloaded, double-click on the “DNS12ServicePack1.exe” file to install the Service Pack. Please be sure to close out of all open applications before installing the Service Pack (except the Service Pack download itself).

Important Note:??If the “Install” button is??selected instead of the “Download Only” button, a message may appear stating that all open applications should be closed before continuing the installation. All applications can be closed except for the Update Service window. The Service Pack can be successfully installed with this window open by pressing the “Ignore” button, however all other applications,??including Dragon NaturallySpeaking 12, must be closed.

 

Additional Tips and Suggestions:

  • Upgrades or modifications should be performed before downloading and installing the Service Pack if there are plans to:
    • Upgrade editions within version 12.0 (Example: v12.0??Home to v12.0 Premium).
    • Modify or repair the installation (Example: install a new vocabulary).
  • After applying the Service Pack, the Service Pack will need to be re-installed if:
    • Dragon NaturallySpeaking is upgraded within editions of version 12.0.
    • Dragon NaturallySpeaking installation is modified,??repaired, or removed.
  • The Service Pack cannot be un-installed separately. To un-install the Service Pack, it is required to remove the complete Dragon NaturallySpeaking installation from the Windows Control Panel.

How many computers can I install Dragon on?

How many computers can I install Dragon on?

For consumer editions of Dragon speech recognition, like our Dictate Edition, we grant one license of the software. This means you can install Dragon on one computer located at one physical address. We also allow you to install this one copy on a secondary computer for back-up purposes.

For the latest editions of Dragon speech recognition, specifically Dragon for Mac , the license is per user (not per machine).????A licensed speaker is permitted to create and use multiple voice profiles, and these voice profiles can be stored on one or more computers.

A separate license, however, must be purchased for each additional speaker whose voice profile or voice profiles is or are being used by the software.

Dragon NaturallySpeaking 13 and Windows 10

On July 29, 2015, Microsoft officially began releasing its latest operating system, Windows 10. According to Microsoft, Windows 10 will be available as a free upgrade for qualified and genuine Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 devices.

How does this relate to Dragon NaturallySpeaking 13?

Dragon NaturallySpeaking 13 is supported on Windows 10. Customers who have a qualified Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 device that already has Dragon NaturallySpeaking 13 installed should be able to upgrade to Windows 10 without needing to re-install DNS 13. Similarly, customers who upgrade to Windows 10 should be able to subsequently install DNS 13 without issue.

Are there any known issues running Dragon NaturallySpeaking 13 on Windows 10?

Windows 10 has two main modes: desktop mode and tablet mode. In desktop mode, Dragon NaturallySpeaking 13 should work with all previously supported applications. In tablet mode, where applications become viewable as full screen. Dragon NaturallySpeaking 13 should also continue to function normally with previously supported applications. There may be some cosmetic variances in the behavior of the DragonBar, and some UI elements, such as the Learning Center, may appear in full screen mode. These issues should not impact the use of Dragon NaturallySpeaking 13.

Nuance is currently investigating the use of certain voice commands with Outlook 2013, which can cause Outlook to freeze. Customers can continue to dictate into Outlook 2013 using full text control without issue. We will provide more detail regarding the use of voice commands with Outlook 2013 in additional support documents. Other supported versions of Outlook work as expected with Dragon NaturallySpeaking 13 on Windows 10.

How will Dragon NaturallySpeaking 13 work with new Windows 10 applications, such as the new Edge browser or Universal apps?

 

Edge is a new browser from Microsoft that comes with Windows 10. Microsoft has not published any APIs for developers such as Nuance that would enable us to do advanced integration with Edge. As a result, customers can do basic dictation into edit controls in an Edge browser. But they may not be able to use full text controls or other advanced voice commands.

DNS 13 supports alternate browsers, such as Internet Explorer or Chrome, on Windows 10. With the same level of functionality provided on Windows 7 and 8/8.1.

Universal apps are the successor to Metro apps in Windows 8/8.1. Dragon Naturally Speaking 13 will provide the same level of basic dictation support for Universal apps on Windows 10 as it did for Metro apps in Windows 8/8.1.

Windows 10 has new or modified features, such as the new Start menu. That were not available in Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1. As a result, customers may not be able to use voice commands to control the new features in Windows 10.
